4 Safe Summer Outdoor Exercise Tips

However, the key to exercising successfully outdoors is to do it safely. When you abandon safety while exercising, you put yourself at risk of getting seriously hurt or sick. You could get heat stroke or be seriously injured when not exercising outdoors safely. If you want to exercise safely outdoors, here are four tips you must know.

Choose the Best Time of Day to Exercise

One big key to having a safe outdoor workout is to always choose the best time of day to do it. This will help enhance your outdoor exercise experience and reduce any heat-related injuries. Avoid exercising between 10 am and 4 pm if possible. Try instead exercising early in the morning and late in the evening. Cooler temperatures happen early in the morning before the afternoon, and the evening is better for comfortable, longer workouts.

Stay Hydrated Before, During, and After Exercise

Another very important tip is to always stay hydrated at all times outdoors. Drink water before, during, and after exercise. Try to consume at least 8 ounces of H2O before exercising and continue to do so throughout your session. Water or sports drinks with electrolytes are also good to have for intense physical activity.

Dress for Comfort and Heat Safety

Having a safe outdoor exercise also involves wearing comfortable clothes. Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing that will allow your sweat to evaporate quickly. Also, wear lightly-colored clothing to reflect the sun’s rays. Be sure to protect your head with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. Always apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher before heading outdoors.

Listen to Your Body During Hot Weather

The last but not least thing to do is to always listen to the condition of your body when exercising in hot weather. If you’re feeling dizzy or nauseous, you could be experiencing signs of heat exhaustion. Take some frequent breaks in the shade and allow yourself time to adapt to the heat. When you start to feel moments of confusion, rapid heartbeat, feeling faint, and lack of sweating, it’s best to stop exercising.

Stay Safe and Fit This Summer

Exercising becomes even more fun when you’re doing it outdoors. Women can face some unique challenges when getting in shape outdoors, such as dehydration, sun exposure, and other heat-related illnesses. But they could work through them by listening to their bodies when not feeling okay, always staying hydrated, dressing for comfort and heat safety, and exercising during the best time of the day, such as early morning or in the evening. So be sure to engage in small, consistent workouts that could lead to long-term health and well-being.
