4 Tips Women Could Take in Making Exercise a Routine

As you age, exercise becomes an even more integral part of your routine. It’s vital that we develop a fitness routine to better manage our health. However, keeping up with your exercise routine isn’t always easy. Let’s learn about four tips for making exercise a regular routine.

Why Making Exercise a Regular Routine is So Challenging

Making exercise a regular routine is definitely a challenge, especially when you have a busy schedule. You have to really make time for it. We are aware that it’s important, but some of us are not the most disciplined at staying consistent. Some people also create unrealistic fitness expectations for themselves and end up being disappointed when they don’t reach them. Examples of this include working out for 30-40 minutes a day or an hour each day. Also, others are just simply not motivated enough to make exercise a regular routine as they should. Some may feel that they don’t need it.

Changing Your Mindset about Exercise

However, it’s possible to change your full mindset about exercise. Stop viewing it as a chore and try to make it fun again. It’s not a form of punishment, but rather a healthy form of self-care. Engaging in some form of exercise, whether it’s a gym workout or an at-home workout, is good for the mind as well as the soul. It’s good in the long run to take small, consistent actions to build more exercise habits.

Tips for Making Exercise a Regular Routine

So, how can you make exercising a regular routine? How can you discipline yourself to stay consistent with exercising? In order to do this, let’s examine four tips we can take to make it a significant part of our everyday life.

Start Small in Building a Sustainable Habit

It’s important when building a healthy habit, such as exercising, that you start small. Short exercises that last 10-15 minutes could add up and work better in the long run. You don’t want to start off with 40-50 minutes workouts. Doing this will put a serious strain on your muscles. Take small steps to make exercise a regular habit.

Choose Exercises You Enjoy

Another great way to make exercise a consistent habit is to choose fitness routines you actually like. When you choose some exercises that are too long or grueling, and you do them anyway because you think you have to, exercising will start to feel like a chore. It won’t feel fun to you anymore. By choosing exercises that are enjoyable and not too overwhelming, it’ll be easy to make this a habit. For example, Zumba workouts are my favorite exercise because they combine dancing with weight loss aerobics. I was even attending a Zumba workout class consistently. But then I learned that you could do these fun exercises by means of YouTube videos at home, which makes it a little easier for me to exercise more often.

Setting Reminders on Your Calendar

A lot of people have developed a habit of setting important reminders on digital calendars such as Google Calendar. Why not try setting a reminder for yourself to start your fitness activities? This could help you discipline yourself to make exercise a regular routine. Just schedule yourself to exercise between 15-30 minutes around a particular time you prefer, i.e., after work at 5 or 6pm. Just like someone scheduling important appointments on their calendar motivates them to make that engagement, setting a reminder about exercise time should push you to go out and do it.

Make Exercise Fit Your Lifestyle

Another good tip is to make it fit your overall lifestyle. If you can’t afford the monthly gym workouts, give the at-home workouts a try. Maybe you’re always on the go. Perhaps a monthly gym membership could be best. Consider adapting routines during busy or stressful seasons. There are plenty of routines for busy people who could only block 10 minutes of fitness in their lives, to retired ones who have a little more time for it.

Mental and Emotional Benefits of Making Exercise a Routine

Besides benefiting your physical health, you get a lot of mental and emotional benefits from exercising. Many people have seen their mood go up after working out. It could also make you think clearly and lower your chances of being diagnosed with neurological diseases such as dementia or Alzheimer’s. Exercising could also reduce stress and anxiety. It makes you more confident in yourself and helps you feel good both inside and out. So choose one small step at a time to make exercise a huge part of your routine.
